“Betsy Q”
Workshops for Teachers and Librarians
For children, Betsy Q is a friend with a great message. For
parents, she’s a stress reliever…and for teachers, she’s a classroom
SOL resource. Betsy Q is a professional
musician, songwriter and performer of children’s music. She writes all of her
own songs and performs them in an upbeat, interactive concert. Using a keyboard
and drum machine in her shows as well as prerecorded instrumentation from her
cd’s, she moves around the stage and into the audience, captivating them with
her unique style. For over 17 years, Betsy Q has been performing for children
and their families in schools, libraries and family events.
Her music focuses on rhythm, easy melodies, and
repetition and she encourages the audience to sing
along.
Betsy Q provides her own professional sound system, which
takes about 2hours to set up and an hour to tear down.
Workshops for Teachers and
Librarians: Betsy Q will show you how you can use her up beat,
educational music in the classroom and library. Using some of the same songs
from her concerts as well as some of her other music, she will demonstrate how
her music is a wonderful tool for teaching children about the environment,
animals, insects, self esteem, community, patriotism, and much more. She will
perform the songs as in her shows and instead of bringing children up on stage,
she will invite some teachers to play the parts. Its fun and it demonstrates to
the teachers and librarians how the children can do the motions too. She also
includes crafts that other teachers have created using Betsy Q music as the
idea.
Betsy Q. demonstrates that not only are the children having a great time with the songs, but they are also receiving an educational message. The objectives in language arts, social studies and science are incorporated in her songs and are connected to the Standards of Learning that the educators are required to teach. Betsy Q believes that music is a great resource for teaching children and it encourages them to hold onto the information for a lifetime.
Style Weekly has selected Betsy Q as one of the “Best Entertainers” in Richmond. With over 30 years of experience, Betsy Q started out as a rock and roll musician and songwriter, performing in venues and colleges up and down the east coast.
She started writing for children when teaching music at CATSCAP, a summer creative arts program at St. Catherine’s school in Richmond.
With 5 cd’s out, her music has been recommended by the American Library Association and has been a suggested resource for teachers in Virginia and beyond.
Betsy Q has performed workshops for elementary school teachers, librarians (in Michigan), VAECE several times but most recently in 2005, and student teachers at Longwood College and UVA in Wise, Va. plus other early childhood educational conferences.
